Bolivia is one of the poorest countries in the Western hemisphere, its population eking out a living on infertile plots of land or mining metals and minerals from private seams.

The majority of Bolivia's terrain is harsh and inhospitable, making for a hard existence for most of its 8 million inhabitants. However, it is the most infertile part, the altiplano or high plain, where most of its people live.

But Bolivia is one of the most quintessentially South American countries. Travelling overland, by bus one gets the impression that the country is the last frontier, its terrain reminiscent of scenes from the film "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid". Indeed, the two American outlaws are believed to have finally met their end in Bolivia. One still sees a variety of awesome landscapes peopled by communities that have changed little since the Conquest.

It is a country of superlatives: La Paz is the world's highest capital, boasts the highest ski run, golf course and international airport, Titicaca the highest navigable and one of the most beautiful lakes. Lake Uyuni, high up in the altiplano, a mystical jewel of a place. Covering an area the size of Yorkshire, it is the highest and largest salt lake in the world.

Close to the border of Lake Titicaca are the remains of an important pre-Columbian city, Tiahuanaco, which preceded the Inca Empire. Titicaca is also important because it is the site of the Inca Creation. As well as the high plains, Andean mountains and vast lakes, Bolivia has Amazon rainforest, low humid swampland in the Pantanal close to Brazil and dry scrubland of the Chaco.
